- Patsy,
-
- Here's the initial result of our Thanksgiving holiday
- discussions. It is a program called ASL-TRAN, short for
- American Sign Language Translator. Rather presumptuous name
- on my part, as it merely translates the 26 alphabetical
- symbols into ASL, letter for sign, one by one. I.e., it is
- merely fingerspelling.
-
- Just stick it into the A: drive of any IBM compatible
- computer that has decent graphics such as a Hercules
- monochrome card, or an EGA card. Then type ASL-TRAN, press
- return, and follow the menu.
-
- It's probably a bit buggy still, but the basic features seem
- to work. Please let me know what you think of it!
-
- Some comments:
-
- Make a backup copy right away, and put the original away.
-
- It can be copied onto a hard drive with no problem. It
- always looks for its support files on the default drive, in
- the default directory.
-
- The REQUIRED FILES are named:
- ASL-TRAN.EXE
- TEXT
- EGAVGA.BGI
- CGA.BGI
- etc... .BGI
-
- Actually you only need the BGI file that matches your
- hardware, but to avoid confusion, I suggest you keep them
- all together, especially if you plan to give a copy to
- anyone.
-
- It will read any text file you have, but the default one is
- named TEXT. Always keep TEXT available. It will even
- translate this note if you select option 6. and use the name
- ASL-TRAN.DOC. I've sent you files called TEACHER, BEADS,
- ISLAND, and KGARTEN which can be selected via option 6. to
- replace TEXT. ISLAND is with the old spelling.
-
- The most confusing option is the one that saves what you
- type (via option 3.) into a text file for later use. I
- suggest you use a wordprocessor that can write plain text
- instead, but if you can't... First select option 8. and
- give a valid DOS-type name to your output file. Then select
- option 4. to turn on the SAVE mode. Then proceed to use
- option 3. as usual. Your keystrokes will be saved in the
- named file.
-
- An undocumented feature, which I don't promise to support,
- is that you can sometimes force a multi-moded graphics card
- with a multi-sync monitor into any of its possible modes.
- Type in ASL-TRAN ? and press return for a brief note to
- this effect.
-
- The second undocumented feature is that you can change the
- size of the ASL characters, though this may be buggy. Try
- it anyhow! Type "ASL-TRAN -1 1.6" or "ASL-TRAN -1 2.1",
- etc. The last number (1.6 or 2.1 in these examples) is a
- size multiplier. The "-1" means use the default graphics
- mode. Good luck. I like 1.6 and 2.1 the best. Something
- like 0.6 will SHRINK the characters. (Gives more per
- screen if you can read 'em!)
-
- Note: If you use the ESC key to stop one of the actions ( 1,
- 2, 3, or 9) you may need to press return/enter to get the
- menu back.
-
- The program sticks as much text as will fit onto a screen
- without any attention to getting whole words, etc. Sorry.
-
-
- Enjoy.
- Happy New Year to you, Ted, Nissa, and Chris!
-
- Ben.
